It is a light switch that never gets wired in. That is the appeal, and it is why the thing goes missing: nothing in the box gives it a place to sit on a table, so it lies flat, gets pushed around by a sleeve, and turns up face down behind the mail.

The magnet is in the dimmer, not the pedestal - the pedestal carries the steel slug that magnet grips. It sets down at an angle you can press without lifting it, and it stays put when you press it, which is the part that matters: a dimmer with nothing holding it walks backward across a table over a week of being pushed at.

The five sizes are one design at five widths. A single slot is 55 mm (2.2 in) across and each further slot adds 45 mm: 100 mm (3.9 in) for the double, 145 mm (5.7 in) for the triple, 190 mm (7.5 in) for the quadruple and 235 mm (9.3 in) for the quintuple, which is wider than most people picture. Depth and height never change - 105.9 mm (4.2 in) front to back, 39.9 mm (1.6 in) tall. Count the dimmers that will live in one spot, then measure the surface; at four and five, measure first.

There are more than 20 colors. Each filament is either matte or glossy, so the finish comes with the color: White, Cool Gray, Chocolate, Seafoam and Pistachio are flat under a lamp, Jet Black and the reds and blues catch the light. Speckled Black is a graphite base with shiny white specks in it, and Cookies & Cream a cool-white base with black specks. Glow-in-the-Dark is a pale gray in daylight and glows green once the lights are off, the one color the preview cannot show - its swatch says so.
