Which Hue remote do you have?
The two generations take different pedestals. One look at the remote settles it.
Look at the bottom button

Philips changed the shape of the Hue dimmer remote between generations, and the pedestals are not interchangeable. The earlier one is taller with a rounded end; the current is shorter and squarer.
If the button is worn and you cannot read it, hold yours against the pictures above. That is quicker than finding the model number, which is printed on the back in a size nobody can read.
